(chef) Central Falls "Fresh to You" at Channel One
Vernia Carter, with the Channel One Community Center in Central Falls,
wants to be sure that the families living in the city of Central Falls
have access to affordable fresh fruits and veggies on a regular basis.
She also wants to ensure that they have an opportunity to learn from a
local chef, simple and easy ways to prepare their fresh fruits and veggies.
She has invited Kids First Chef, Sandy Sepe, to demonstrate a variety
of healthy recipes with the vegetables available at the "Fresh to You"
market on this day. The participant buyers will have a chance to learn
about and taste some delicious fresh produce prepared in a simple and
healthy way, as well as purchase it at a reasonable price.
9/17/08: Farm to School Harvest Festival for Students in 7 School Districts
ARAMARK, the food service vendor for 7 RI school districts (North
Providence, Central Falls, Smithfield, Lincoln, Chariho, Scituate, and
East Greenwich), is hosting district wide RI Harvest Festivals today,
as part of these districts' RI Farm to School program. Rhode Island grown
fruits and vegetables will be specially purchased, prepared and served
to all students in their school meals programs as a means of celebrating
Rhode Island's bountiful harvest. Students in select schools will also
participate in farmer and chef demonstrations, and farm education activities
right in their cafeterias. All students will be able to enjoy such tasty
treats as fresh RI potatoes, apples, apple cider, butternut squash, zucchini
sticks, lettuce, cucumbers, tomatoes, possibly corn on the cob, and more.
The RI Farm to School Program goal is that eventually, all RI school districts
will purchase their fruits, vegetables, milk and other fresh ingredients
from RI farms whenever possible, serving RI children RI grown foods in
school, thus supporting local farms and helping to preserve farmland and
open space.

The RI Healthy Schools Coalition Breakfast for School Leaders
The RI Healthy Schools Coalition Breakfast for School Leaders:
Eat Healthy - Get Active - Score High! is at the Crowne Plaza this
morning beginning at 7:15AM. Over 300 RI school and community leaders
will meet over a healthy, locally grown breakfast, to discuss the NEW
nutrition criteria for school meals, RINR 2009, and the NEW Physical Education
law just passed in 2008. There will also be a special feature presentation
by Dr. Joanne Owens-Nauslar, a national advocate for active healthy living.
Dr. Nauslar will have the school and community leaders laughing, learning
and getting energized for leading the transformation to healthier school
environments throughout this 2008-2009 school year.
9/24/07:
W. Warwick Family Resource Fair at Deering MS
Larry Lamothe, Director of Personnel & Human Resources for the West
Warwick School Department, has invited Kids First to be a part of their
2nd Annual Family Resource Fair and Open House at the John F. Deering
Middle School in West Warwick. Kids First Chef/Dietitian, Katie Hopewood,
will set up a display for the West Warwick families that will help them
to make healthier snack and beverage choices. Parents and students will
be able to participate in the "Think Your Drink" activity which has them
measuring and calculating the amounts of added sugar in the beverages
that they may consume daily. Dietitian Katie will also set up a display
of kid-pleasing snacks that provide lots of great nutrients without all
the sugar and fat. Participants will leave armed with lots of great information
to help them be more nutritionally discriminating for their own improved
health.
