10/11 10/18, 10/25: "After School Fit Kids" Series is at Curtis Elementary
Tracy Provoyeur, Coordinator of the After School Program at the Flora
S. Curtis Elementary School in Pawtucket, wanted to get in on the afterschool
fitness "action." She wants the children in her afterschool program to
learn the importance of healthy eating and daily exercise through fun
hands-on activities, so she has arranged with Kids First to provide a
variety of programs. During the 13 week program, Kids First Chefs, Jessica
Williams and Aaron Lenart, will engage the children in a variety of healthy
food experiences that are age appropriate and guaranteed to peak their
taste buds. Also, Kids First Fitness Professionals, Dawn Anderson, Lori
Keough and Kristine DeSerres, will show the kids how to get moving and
get energized. And Kids First Master Gardener, Kim Korb, will teach the
children how to plant herbs that they can grow on their windowsill at
home. There's plenty more, as the entire 13-week program includes lots
of special guests who will engage the children in a wide variety of healthy
activities.

Providence School Nurses Participate in "Wellness"
Donna O'Connor, Nurse/Health Services Administration in Providence
has invited Kids First professionals, Mary-Elena DeLuca, Sandy Sepe and
Karin Wetherill, to conduct a wellness workshop for all of the Providence
school nurses. This workshop is an interactive program that helps participants
improve their own nutrition and food safety habits, and increase their
daily physical activity. Workshop topics include "Sweeten Up Your Life
Without That Extra Sugar and Turn Household Chores into an Exercise Program."
The nurses will leave full of ideas to use in the classroom and at home
that encourage healthy eating and active living.
10/9, 10/16, 10/23, 10/30: Providence Public Library Tackles Teen Physical
Activity
Erica Wilder, Coordinator of the "Bites & Bytes" Program at the Smith
Hill and South Providence Branches of the Providence Public Library wants
her area teens to understand the importance of regular exercise and limiting
sedentary activities like TV watching and playing computer games. She
has asked Kid First Physical Activity Professional, Lori Keough, to work
with the teens on increasing their physical activity. Lori with teach
the teens how to warm up, stretch and do fun aerobic exercise routines
that include great kick boxing moves.
10/11/07:
Smithfield Parents "Fight BAC!"
Marilyn Sepe, School Nurse Teacher at the Raymond LaPerche School
in Smithfield, understands the importance of keeping food safe both at
school and at home. Jessica Williams, Kids First Chef/Food Safety Specialist
will engage parents from the LaPerche school community in appropriate
food safety practices. Jessica will present the 4 C's of food safety:
CLEAN, SEPARATE, COOK and CLEAN and discuss how they can be incorporated
in all food related activities and events held at the school and practiced
at home.
10/13/07:
Lonsdale School Hosts Health & Wellness Fair
Jan Boucher, School Nurse at the Lonsdale Elementary School in Lincoln,
is holding a Health & Wellness Fair for her school community. She has
asked Kids First Dietitian, Anna Bertorelli, to join in the fun with ideas
on healthy snacks for the parents and children who attend the fair. Dietitian
Anna will make an easy Harvest Popcorn Trail Mix for the participants
to taste. The Trail Mix, along with handouts will give the participants
great healthy ideas that they can easily reproduce at home.

Parents from Curvin McCabe School "Fight Bac!"
Rosemary Fazia, Principal, and Linda Lomax, School Nurse Teacher at
the Curvin McCabe Elementary School in Pawtucket, understands the importance
of keeping food safe both at school and at home. They have asked Kids
First Chef/ Food Safety Specialist, Sandy Sepe, to share food safety tips
and practices with the children's parents. Parents will be exposed to
the 4 C's of food safety, CLEAN, SEPARATE, COOK and CHILL. Parents will
learn how to apply the "Fight Bac!" concepts to packing a safe lunch for
their child and will become informed enough to ask questions about food
safety practices wherever they eat.
10/24/07:
CCRI Nursing Students Learn to "Fight Bac!" Deb Svitel, Teacher at
CCRI in Warwick, understands the importance of keeping food safe both
at school and at home. She has asked Kids First Food Safety Specialist,
Elizabeth Bugden, to share food safety tips and practices with her nursing
students. The students will be exposed to the 4 C's of food safety, CLEAN,
SEPARATE, COOK and CHILL.
