Educational Wellness Workshops

Superintendents' Wellness Workshop - The Rhode Island School Superintendent's Association (RISSA) and Kids First invite your school district to schedule a workshop exclusively for your district leadership team. The Superintendents' Wellness Workshop is designed to suit the needs of your particular district and will help district leadership better understand and implement current federal, state and district laws and guidelines regarding school wellness. It provides attendees with knowledge to improve personal health habits and increase daily physical activity.

Teacher/Staff Wellness Workshops: These workshops provide easy ways for teachers and other school staff to integrate nutrition and food safety into their existing curriculum. They can focus on specific subject areas such as literacy, math or science. Each participant receives a resource packet including posters with ideas on how to present lessons to students combining existing curriculum concepts with strategies on being healthier. Staff members learn how to be role models for the students by incorporating wellness into their own personal lives.

Parent/Community Wellness Workshops:
"Eating Healthy on a Budget" -
This workshop can be tailored for your school district's needs, but can include a session where parents and students participate in an interactive, hands-on chef demo featuring seasonally available ingredients that won't break the budget. Participants will learn basic nutrition facts and tips for improving overall wellness.
"Rethinking Fundraising Workshop" - Let Kids First Staff help make your fundraising efforts into ones that work with your current Wellness Policy and encourage healthy lifestyle choices among students. This workshop will review your current fundraising with wellness in mind. Learn how your school can develop fun (and profitable!) ways to involve the school community in healthier eating, increased physical activity and a consistent message about school policy and environment.

Classroom Workshops:
"Rhode Island Farm to School Workshops" - Connect the kids in your your school district to Rhode Island farms! Kids First Staff can work with you to create a customized educational program at your school to help students, staff and the school community understand why eating fresh Rhode Island farm products are important to children's health and our local economy.
"School Gardens" - Workshops and resources available through the partnership of the Children’s Garden Network and Kids First RI can enhance the educational components of a School Garden Program. The Kids First professional team of chefs,farm-to-school specialists, master gardeners and nutrition educators can design a school-specific workshop or provide curriculum materials to connect the growing of flowers, fruit, herbs, plants, trees and vegetables to creating
a healthier school environment.

How Are Kids First Educational Wellness Workshops Structured?

Kids First Workshops are designed to motivate teachers, school staff, administration, parents, students, or other community workplace personnel to work together and make positive food and physical activity choices and practice safe food habits and techniques.

Kids First workshops involve all five senses in the learning process. Information is presented, not preached. The customized, action-oriented workshops encourage participants to explore, investigate, test, and sample in order to make the lessons long-lasting.

WANTED
Kids First is looking for Spanish-speaking nutritionists and chefs who want to get involved in our classroom and parent programs teaching children and their parents that there is more in life than fast food! Help kids and their parents learn about the real foods, whole grains, and fruits and vegetables that taste great and are good for them too.

We run workshops for all grade levels (and adults) throughout the state. Most school visits can be arranged when YOU are available. A stipend is paid for the visits along with reimbursement for any food and supplies that are purchased.
