Food Safety Inspection Service
Kids First offers the Food Safety Inspection Service to all RI schools and RCCI's at a low cost. Our commitment is to ensure that the students in our school system are served the safest food possible.
Kids First is a state approved third party food safety inspection service with the RI Department of Health, Office of Food Protection. Each site is inspected and documented in accordance with all rules and regulations of the RI Department of Health, Office of Food Protection.
Please note: all RI schools and RCCI’s participating in the USDA Child Nutrition programs MUST be inspected twice yearly to be in compliance with USDA federal regulation.
It is also highly recommended that even those facilities serving meals but do not participate in the federal program, be inspected at least annually.
Our fees are reasonable and adjusted to the type of food service operation we will be inspecting.

Food Safe Schools Program:
Through a grant awarded to the Rhode Island Department of Education from the CDC, the Food-Safe Schools program was developed. Rhode Island was the first state to develop and certify the nation's first Food-Safe Schools. The RI School Food Safety Partnership, consisting of the RI Departments of Education and Health, Kids First, the University of Rhode Island and the RI School Nurse Teachers Association developed the Food-Safe Schools Action Guide Toolkit to assist schools on the journey to becoming a food-safe school.
What is a Food-Safe School?
A food-safe school takes the steps to minimize the risk of foodborne illness throughout the school's environment and has procedures in place to identify and manage outbreaks if they occur.
What is the Food-Safe Schools Action Guide?
The Food-Safe Schools Action Guide is a toolkit that provides a one stop resource for preventing foodborne illness. The Action Guide helps schools identify gaps in food safety and develop an action plan for becoming food-safe. It includes recommendations on what school staff and community members can do to prevent foodborne illness and also contains useful tips and resources to help prioritize recommendations and take action.
