5/8/08:
High Roads School Takes the High Road to Good Nutrition
Maurine Daw, School Nurse at the High Roads Interim School in Providence,
makes the connection between healthy eating and school achievement. She
has invited Kids First Chef/Dietitian, Katie Hopewood, to provide her
students with some hands-on nutrition lessons. Chef Katie will introduce
the students to some tasty whole grains and fruits and veggies. The students
will go home and beg their parents to add healthier foods to their shopping
list.

Central Falls High School Puts On Health Fair
Channel One-Central Falls, Ralph J. Holden Community Center and Central
Falls High School welcome Kids First to the Spring Student Health Fair.
Students will have the opportunity to view displays and receive handouts
on healthy eating and nutrition from our exhibit at the Fair. The knowledge
shared here is essential and desirable to students, teachers and staff
alike. Healthy snacks will be handed out to all participating students.
5/8/08: West Warwick Schools Leadership Team Attends Superintendent Wellness
Workshop
Larry Lamothe, Director of Personnel & Human Resources in West Warwick,
has invited Kids First professionals: Mary-Elena DeLuca, Sandy Sepe and
Karin Wetherill, to conduct a wellness workshop for all of the district's
top administrators. This workshop is an interactive program that helps
participants improve their own nutrition and food safety habits, and increase
their daily physical activity. Workshop topics include "Sweeten Up Your
Life Without That Extra Sugar" and "Turn Household Chores into an Exercise
Program." The participants will discuss their district's wellness policy,
learn about the RI Law regarding healthy beverages and snacks in school,
obtain great ideas for fundraising and classroom/school celebrations,
and hopefully begin to realize that building a district culture of wellness
begins with each of them.
5/9/08
: Cranston Calvert School Kids Café Gets Lesson in Nutrition
Kids First and the RI Community Food Bank are working in partnership
to bring hands-on nutrition programs to the children at the Kids Café.
Josh Anderson has invited Kids First Chef, Jessica Williams, to show the
children at the Cranston Calvert School in Newport how simple it is to
follow My Pyramid. The will learn the principles of "go, slow and whoa!"
and make a tasty nutritious snack.

Ponagansett Middle School Puts On Health Fair
Students will have the opportunity to view displays and receive handouts
on healthy eating and nutrition from our Kids First exhibit at the Fair.
The knowledge shared here is essential and desirable to students, teachers
and staff alike. Healthy snacks will be handed out to all participating
students.
5/15/08: RI Food Pantries in Providence Get Energized
Kids First has partnered with the Rhode Island Community Food Bank
to provide member agency coordinators and staff with nutrition and physical
activity training so that they will become role models for their clients.
The coordinators and staff of Food Pantries in the Providence area have
invited Kids First professionals, Mary-Elena DeLuca and Sandra Sepe, to
provide a hands-on workshop for them. They will learn new ideas for preparing
the foods they receive at the pantry that they can share with their clients.
Simple ways to prepare healthier, great-tasting meals and snacks and a
cooking demonstration will energize the group.
5/15/08: Pawtucket Parents Learn "Nutritious Can Be Delicious"
Mary Doyle, Director of the "Parents as Teacher" Program in Pawtucket,
wants the parents in her group to know nutrition basics to pass on to
their children. She has invited Kids First Chef, Deniece Villafona, to
engage the kids and their parents in a program of healthy eating and learning
to create simple healthy recipes the kids will love to eat. An interactive
workshop along with a healthy food demonstration and tasting reminds both
the kids and their parents that what they eat can be nutritious, delicious
and easy to prepare.
5/16/08:
Warwick High Schoolers Teach the Elementary Kids
Every spring, Deb Tillnghast, Family and Consumer Science Teacher
at Toll Gate High School, leads a group of energized high school students
to plan and conduct healthy activities with students in John Greene Elementary
School. Kids First will help by sending in Kids First Physical Activity
Professional, Louis Moniz, to lead the large group of high school and
elementary school children together in active dance sessions. "Mad Louis"
will teach them how to do the Bus Stop, Electric Slide, Swing, or any
dance they want to learn!
5/17/08: Providence Parent Conference at PAIS
Janet Pichardo and Ida Valentin from the Office of Family & Community
Engagement want to be sure that the parents in Providence learn about
the importance of nutrition and about easy ways to put together meals
and snacks that are great tasting, nutritious and quick to make. She has
invited Kids First Spanish speaking Chef, Luz Ocampo, to work with the
parents and get them on the road to healthy cooking and eating.
5/19/08:
