5/2/08: Girl Scouts Get "Chef Lessons" to Obtain Nutrition Badges
Jennifer Jenkes has invited Kids First's J&W intern, Justin Polemeni,
to provide information about healthy snacks and food preparation options
for a group of Girl Scouts hoping to obtain their badge in nutrition .
Presentation will be at the Lincoln School from 3 - 4:30PM and will include
lessons about My Pyramid and how to make nutritious between-meal snacks.
5/3/08: Kids First Presents at NE School Nurse Conference
Patricia Lupoli, Co-Chairman of the New England School Nurse Conference,
knows the importance of nutrition as part of a healthy lifestyle. She
has invited Kids First Professionals, Chef Sandy Sepe and Dietitian, Mary-Elena
Deluca, to provide a fun, hands-on workshop that will promote healthy
behavioral changes in nutrition, food safety and physical activity. Emphasis
will be placed on healthy portion sizes and reading labels. The participants
will have the opportunity to try a variety of nutritious, great tasting
foods and will leave armed with healthy ideas for themselves and their
students.
5/3/08:
Healthy Kids Day at Paul Cuffee Charter
School Kathy Todeno, the school nurse at Paul Cuffee Charter School,
has invited Kids First to participate in the Healthy Kids Day on Saturday
May 3rd from 10am to 2pm. The Kids First professionals will set up activity
stations for exploratory learning. Participants will actively engage in
learning about such topics as: making better food choices, controlling
portions, preparing quick nutritious snacks on the run, and preparing
food safely.

Providence Salvation Army Kids Café Gets Lesson in Nutrition
Kids First and the RI Community Food Bank are working in partnership
to bring hands-on nutrition programs to the children at the Kids Café.
Captain David Collins has invited Kids First Chef, Jessica Williams, to
show the children at the Salvation Army in Providence how simple it is
to follow My Pyramid. They will learn about "GO", "SLOW" and "WHOA" foods
and together will make a tasty nutritious snack.
5/5/08:
Flora Curtis 6th Graders get Lesson in "Go, Slow & Whoa!"
Kathy Andreozzi, School Nurse at the Flora Curtis Elementary School
in Pawtucket wants her students to learn all about My Pyramid. She has
invited Kids First Chef/Nutritionist, Kimberly Sporkmann, to visit the
classes and explain how simple it is to understand My Pyramid. Chef Kimberly
will explain how some foods are "go" foods that they should eat
often, like whole grains and fresh fruits and veggies. She'll explain
how some foods are "slow" foods and should be chosen less often.
The "slow" foods typically are fruit and veggie based foods with
some added fats and sugars or are refined grain foods, as opposed to whole
grains. Finally, the students will learn about "whoa" foods. These
are the foods that really should be avoided or chosen only occasionally.
Favorite "whoa" foods are French fries and ice cream.
5/6/08:
Cranston's Orchard Farms Students Plant Veggies
Orchard Farms Elementary School in Cranston is getting greener by
the classroom! Teacher, Michelle Lemme, will get her students into the
soiless mix to begin the process of growing some classroom veggies. The
school has a Classroom Grow Box so that each year her students can participate
in the Healthy Eating From the Ground Up Program. Ms. Lemme has found
this program to be academically beneficial and highly motivational for
her students. Today they are ready to begin the program with some help
from Kids First Master Gardener, Kim Korb.
5/6/08:
"Wellness" for Parents in Hopkins Hill in Coventry
Kathy Larson, School Nurse at the Hopkins Hill School in Coventry,
has invited Kids First Professionals, Dietitian Mary-Elena DeLuca and
Chef Sandy Sepe, to conduct a wellness workshop for all of the parents
at the school. This workshop is an interactive program that helps participants
improve their own nutrition and food safety habits, and increase their
daily physical activity. Workshop topics include "Sweeten Up Your Life
Without That Extra Sugar" and "Turn Household Chores into an Exercise
Program." The parents will leave full of ideas to use at home that encourage
healthy eating and active living.

Met School Throws Health Fair for Students
Rosemary O'Brian, from the Neighborhood Health Plan is working with
the Met School in Providence. She has invited Kids First to participate
in the Health Fair for the student body from 9am to 3pm. The Kids First
professionals will set up activity stations for exploratory learning.

5/14, 5/21, 5/28: "After School Fit Kids" Series is at Fallon Memorial
School
Leslie Pietraszka, Coordinator of the After School Program at Fallon
Memorial School in Pawtucket, wanted to get in on the afterschool fitness
"action." She wants the children in her afterschool program to learn the
importance of healthy eating and daily exercise through fun hands-on activities,
so she has arranged with Kids First to provide a variety of programs.
During the 5 week program, Kids First Chefs, Jessica Williams will engage
the children in a variety of healthy food experiences that are age appropriate
and guaranteed to peak their taste buds. Also, Kids First Fitness Professionals:
Louis Moniz, Sat Kartar Kaur Khalsa and Kristine DeSerres, will show the
kids how to get moving and get energized. And Kids First Master Gardener,
Kim Korb, will teach the children how to plant herbs that they can grow
on their windowsill at home.
