| This lesson should be taught as an option of the complete unit.
You know your school community best of all, and how to present this
important agenda for this review class. This lesson presents ideas
you can use, if you wish. You will also know if you are going to
have a family audience for your students. A safety net is the invitation
of the principal and of another class. This way, another class or
grade level will see and hear a preview of the food safety lessons.
This, in itself, is valuable. However, your students will also be
sure to have an audience, which you know is important when so much
preparation goes into a program. Healthy snacks lend authenticity
to this event. |
- Students will explain to others ways to combat foodborne illnesses.
- Students
will demonstrate knowledge about keeping food safe.
- Students will
demonstrate pride in knowing about how to stay healthy through
keeping food safe from harmful bacteria. They
will demonstrate
a special spirit of caring and cooperation toward each other.

- Smart
Kids Fight Bac™ video is a great form of family
entertainment to conclude this lesson (used in Lesson 1).
- The
Food Safety House Flip Chart (used in Lessons 3 and 4).
- Student work
produced in Lessons 1-4.
- Healthy snacks.
- Healthy gifts for each attendee (nice but optional
depending on community resources).
- VCR and monitor.

- Locate the video and flip chart.
- Before beginning the lesson, have
the students produce a simple program. (Guide them in this work.)
- Assign
students to introduce and lead various components of the program,
and coach them for their roles.
- Ask the food service in your
school to provide a simple, healthy snack for the program.
- Arrange
for the donation of a health-related gift for each attending
guest. (optional)
- Arrange for a VCR and monitor to be placed in
your room.
