Central Falls "Fresh to You" at Veterans School
Vernia Carter and Reese Middler with the Channel One Community Center
in Central Falls want to be sure that their community has access to fresh
fruits and veggies on a regular basis. She has invited Kids First Chef,
Elaine Cwyner, to make a healthy rice and beans meal using some of the
vegetables available at their new "Fresh to You" program market. The participants
will have a chance to learn how to cook with different types of fresh
produce from Chef Elaine and ALL will get to taste and sample a wide variety
of produce available at the new market. "Fresh to You" is a brand new
program in RI that brings lots of fresh produce to inner city sites at
very reasonable prices.

GTECH Educates Employees with Help from Kids First
Susan Coppa-Collins, Wellness Consultant to GTECH, wants to be certain
that the best nutrition information gets to all the GTECH employees as
part of a corporate wellness program. She has invited Kids First Chef,
Sandy Sepe, and Johnson & Wales Intern, Adam Cairns, to participate in
the GTECH Health Fair. Chef Sandy and "Almost Chef" Adam, will provide
an investigative nutrition activity, "Think Your Drink" that helps participants
learn how to read and understand labels so they can make healthier food
choices for themselves and their families.

RI Food Pantries in Providence Get Energized
Kids First has partnered with the Rhode Island Community Food Bank
to provide member agency coordinators and staff with nutrition and physical
activity training so that they will become role models for their clients.
The coordinators and staff of Food Pantries in the Providence area have
invited Kids First professionals, Mary-Elena DeLuca and Sandra Sepe, to
provide a hands-on workshop for them at the West End Community Center.
They will learn new ideas for preparing the foods they receive at the
pantry that they can share with their clients. Simple ways to prepare
healthier, great-tasting meals and snacks and a cooking demonstration
will energize the group.

Kids First has partnered with the Rhode Island Community Food Bank
to provide member agency coordinators and staff with nutrition and physical
activity training so that they will become role models for their clients.
The coordinators and staff of Food Pantries in the Tri-Town area have
invited Kids First professionals, Mary-Elena DeLuca and Sandra Sepe, to
provide a hands-on workshop for them at the Smithfield Food Pantry. They
will learn new ideas for preparing the foods they receive at the pantry
that they can share with their clients. Simple ways to prepare healthier,
great-tasting meals and snacks and a cooking demonstration will energize
the group.

Woonsocket Parents Learn Nutritious Can Be Delicious
Jim Dealy, Director of the "Parents as Teacher" Program in Woonsocket,
wants the parents in his group to know nutrition basics to pass on to
their children. He has invited Kids First Chef, Elaine Cwyner, to engage
the kids and their parents in a program of healthy eating and learning
to create simple healthy recipes the kids will love to eat. An interactive
workshop along with a healthy food demonstration and tasting reminds both
the kids and their parents that what they eat can be nutritious, delicious
and easy to prepare.
6/23/08:
District Leadership in Warwick Attends Superintendent Wellness Workshop
Steve Lowery, with the Warwick School Department, has invited Kids
First professionals: Mary-Elena DeLuca, Sandy Sepe and Karin Wetherill,
to conduct a Superintendent's Wellness workshop for all of the district's
top administrators. This workshop is an interactive program that helps
participants improve their own nutrition and food safety habits, and increase
their daily physical activity. Workshop topics include "Sweeten Up Your
Life Without That Extra Sugar" and "Turn Household Chores into an Exercise
Program." The participants will discuss their district's wellness policy,
learn about the RI Law regarding healthy beverages and snacks in school,
obtain great ideas for fundraising and classroom/school celebrations,
and hopefully begin to realize that building a district culture of wellness
begins with each of them.
