6/2/08: Healthy Foods Lessons at the Providence Salvation Army Kids Café
Kids First and the RI Community Food Bank are working in partnership
to bring hands-on nutrition programs to the children at the Kids Café.
Captain David Collins has invited Kids First Chef, Kimberly Sporkmann,
to show the children at the Salvation Army in Providence how simple it
is to follow My Pyramid. They will learn about "GO", "SLOW" and "WHOA"
foods and together will make a tasty nutritious snack.
6/3/08:
Brown Avenue School Students "Think Their Drinks"
Kids First is making its way to Brown Avenue School in Johnston, RI
by request of Susan Parillo, the Physical Education instructor there.
Adam Cairns, a J&W Culinary Nutrition intern at Kids First, will be teaching
the children about making healthy drink choices. The students will examine
the sugar content of sodas, sports drinks, and fruit juice drinks. Chef
Adam will teach them how to make an energizing and nutritious sports drink
that refuels the body with the nutrients it needs, NOT all that sugar.
6/4/08: Woonsocket Health Fair Teaches Families To Choose Healthy Snacks
Jocelyn Ackerman, the school nurse of Governor Aram J. Pothier School
in Woonsocket, has requested Kids First's participation in a local health
fair. Adam Cairns, a J&W Culinary Nutrition intern at Kids First, will
be presenting a compilation of snack foods that would be great choices
for in between meal snacks. Students and parents alike will learn how
to prepare their own snacks that are tasty, nutritious, and can be easily
packed to-go. Chef Adam will provide a couple of helpful recipes that
families can test at home. There will be food to taste and information
about general nutrition.
6/4/08:
"After School Fit Kids" Series is at Fallon Memorial School
Leslie Pietraszka, Coordinator of the After School Program at Fallon
Memorial School in Pawtucket, wanted to get in on the afterschool fitness
"action." She wants the children in her afterschool program to learn the
importance of healthy eating and daily exercise through fun hands-on activities,
so she has arranged with Kids First to provide a variety of programs.
During the last week of a 6 week program, a Kids First Chef will engage
the children in a variety of healthy food experiences that are age appropriate
and guaranteed to peak their taste buds.

6/12, 6/19, 6/26: "Fit Kids Series" Goes to Braeburn Apartments
Destiny Adams, coordinator of the children's program at the Braeburn
Apartments in Providence, wants to be sure that the children in her program
have a healthy active summer. She has scheduled Kids First Chef, Kimberly
Sporkmann, and Johnson & Wales Intern, Adam Cairns, to engage the children
in a variety of healthy food experiences. Master Gardener, Kim Korb, will
teach the children about the parts of the plants that they eat and show
them how easy it is to plant veggies. Sat Kartar Kaur Khalsa will involve
the kids in yoga that will get them moving. The participants will have
the rest of the summer to continue to improve on their newly learned healthy
activites.

6/6/08:
Cranston Calvert School Kids Café Gets Lesson in Nutrition
Kids First and the RI Community Food Bank are working in partnership
to bring hands-on nutrition programs to the children at the Kids Café.
Josh Anderson has invited Kids First Chef, Katie Hopewood, to show the
children at the Cranston Calvert School in Newport how simple it is to
follow My Pyramid. They will learn about "GO", "SLOW" and "WHOA" foods
and together will make a tasty nutritious snack.
6/6/08:
Master Gardener Visits the Sullivan School Kids Café
Kids First and the RI Community Food Bank are working in partnership
to bring hands-on nutrition programs to the children at the Kids Café.
Josh Anderson has invited Kids First Master Gardener, Kim Korb to introduce
the parts of the plants that we eat to the children at the Sullivan School.
Master Gardener Kim will show the children how to plant their own vegetables
and ALL will taste some delicious raw plant parts (veggies!).
