12/6/07: Winter Wonderland at Jenks in Pawtucket
Linda Mendonca, School Nurse at the Joseph Jenks Jr. High School in Pawtucket, has invited Kids First Professionals, Jessica Williams and Luz Ocampo, to join in the fun with parents and students at their annual Winter Wonderland. Chefs Jessica and Luz will make "Unsoda" with seltzer and 100% juice and a delicious "Trail Mix" with popcorn, sunflower seeds and dried fruit. The parents and students will learn that healthy snacks can be delicious as well as nutritious.

12/6 & 12/11/07: Scituate Teachers MOVE Together for Better Health
School Nurse Colleen McCann and the teachers at the North Scituate Elementary School in Scituate want to be great role models for regular exercise. They have invited Kids First Physical Activity Professional, Lori Keough, to exercise with the staff once per week. Lori will work with all levels to get everyone to build their new pace.

12/6, 12/13 & 12/20/07: "After School Fit Kids" Series is at Curtis Elementary
Tracy Provoyeur, Coordinator of the After School Program at the Flora S. Curtis Elementary School in Pawtucket, wanted to get in on the afterschool fitness "action." She wants the children in her afterschool program to learn the importance of healthy eating and daily exercise through fun hands-on activities, so she has arranged with Kids First to provide a variety of programs. During the 13 week program, Kids First Chefs, Jessica Williams and Aaron Lenart, will engage the children in a variety of healthy food experiences that are age appropriate and guaranteed to peak their taste buds. Also, Kids First Fitness Professionals: Lori Keough and Kristine DeSerres, will show the kids how to get moving and get energized. And Kids First Master Gardener, Kim Korb, will teach the children how to plant herbs that they can grow on their windowsill at home. There's plenty more, as the entire 13-week program includes lots of special guests who will engage the children in a wide variety of healthy activities.

12/7/07: Park Elementary in Warwick Gets Lesson on My Pyramid
The students at the Park Elementary School in Warwick want to learn all they can about the new My Pyramid. Judy Monzack, First Grade Teacher, has invited Kids First Chef/Nutritionist, Jessica Williams, to visit the classes and explain how simple it is to understand. Chef Jessica will explain how some foods are "go" foods that they should eat often, like whole grains and fresh fruits and veggies. She'll explain how some foods are "slow" foods and should be chosen less often. The "slow" foods typically are fruit and veggie based foods with some added fats and sugars or are refined grain foods, as opposed to whole grains. Finally, the students will learn about "whoa" foods. These are the foods that really should be avoided or chosen only occasionally. Favorite "whoa" foods are French fries and ice cream.

12/10/07: Lincoln School Department Leadership Team Attends Superintendent Wellness Workshop
Melinda Smith from the Lincoln School Department has invited Kids First professionals: Mary-Elena DeLuca, Sandy Sepe and Carole Toselli, to conduct a wellness workshop for all of the district administrators. This workshop is an interactive program that helps participants improve their own nutrition and food safety habits, and increase their daily physical activity. Workshop topics include "Sweeten Up Your Life Without That Extra Sugar" and "Turn Household Chores into an Exercise Program." The participants will discuss their wellness policy, learn about the RI Law regarding healthy beverages and snacks in school, and obtain great ideas for fundraising and classroom/school celebrations.

12/10/07: Ishi Dojo Martial Arts Studio Tackles Nutrition
Gilda Piccoli, co-owner of the Ishi Dojo Martial Arts Studio in Providence, wants the students at her studio to understand the importance of nutrition as part of their martial arts training. She has asked Kids First Chef, Katie Hopewood, to visit the studio and help to make healthier eating choices. Chef Katie will show the children how to make easy, nutritious snacks that taste great and that they can make at home.

12/13/07: Parente Villa High Rise Gets Cooking with Kids First
Kids First and the Rhode Island Community Food Bank present a nutrition workshop and cooking demonstration, in partnership with the Parente Villa High Rise in Providence. Participants will learn how to use the foods that they receive at the pantry, simple and inexpensive ways to eat healthier, cooking basics and meal planning. Kids First Chef, William McBride, involves participants with great tasting, easy to make meals that can be reproduced at home. Everyone will leave with simple, new and useful recipe ideas.

12/15/07: St. Albans Outreach Pantry Gets Cooking with Kids First

12/17/07: Mount Pleasant Teachers Participate in "Wellness"
Mary Ann Lilla, School Nurse at the Mount Pleasant High School in Providence has invited Kids First professionals: Mary-Elena DeLuca, Sandy Sepe and Karin Wetherill, to conduct a wellness workshop for all of the teachers at the school. This workshop is an interactive program that helps participants improve their own nutrition and food safety habits, and increase their daily physical activity. Workshop topics include "Sweeten Up Your Life Without That Extra Sugar" and "Turn Household Chores into an Exercise Program." The teachers will leave full of ideas to use in the classroom and at home that encourage healthy eating and active living.
