8/18/08: Healthier Meals Training for Cranston and Westerly Cafeteria Staff
Back-to-school in Cranston and Westerly will mean a fresher, healthier school food service program that strives to meet new nutrition criteria, as developed and adopted by RI Department of Education. The new state nutrition criteria for school meals is entitled RINR 2009 or RI Nutrition Requirements 2009. The state plan, as funded through a USDA Team Nutrition grant, is that all 36 RI school districts will implement RINR 2009 by September 2009. Cranston and Westerly are committed to piloting RINR 2009 this school year and expect to go district wide prior to September 2009. Kids First's Chef and Nutritionist team will be training Cranston and Westerly food service staff today (in separate workshops) as to the requirements of RINR 2009. All will learn, practice and discuss how to incorporate RINR 2009 into the everyday breakfast and lunch programs of Cranston and Westerly public schools. Within the next year, all children in the Cranston and Westerly school systems will be able to enjoy more and wider variety of fruits and vegetables (locally grown too!), more whole grains and less processed foods (lower sodium.)

8/19 & 8/20/08: Healthier Meals Training for East Bay Districts' Cafeteria Staff
Back-to-school in the East Bay districts: Barrington, Bristol-Warren, East Providence, Portsmouth, Middletown, Tiverton and Little Compton will mean a fresher, healthier school food service program that strives to meet new nutrition criteria, as developed and adopted by RI Department of Education. The new state nutrition criteria for school meals is entitled RINR 2009 or RI Nutrition Requirements 2009. The state plan, as funded through a USDA Team Nutrition grant, is that all 36 RI school districts will implement RINR 2009 by September 2009. The East Bay districts are committed to piloting RINR 2009 this school year and expect to fully implement well ahead of the September 2009 deadline. Kids First's Chef and Nutritionist team will be training the East Bay districts' food service staff today on the 19th and 20th as to the requirements of RINR 2009. All will learn, practice and discuss how to incorporate RINR 2009 into the everyday breakfast and lunch programs of the East Bay's seven districts' public schools. Within the next year, all children in the Barrington, Bristol-Warren, East Providence, Portsmouth, Middletown, Tiverton and Little Compton school systems will be able to enjoy more and wider variety of fruits and vegetables (locally grown too!), more whole grains and less processed foods (lower sodium.)

Kids First's Chef and Nutritionist team will be training Providence food service staff today as to the requirements of RINR 2009. All will learn, practice and discuss how to incorporate RINR 2009 into the everyday breakfast and lunch programs of Providence public schools. Within the next year, all children in the Providence school systems will be able to enjoy more and wider variety of fruits and vegetables (locally grown too!), more whole grains and less processed foods (lower sodium.)

Back-to-school in Smithfield will mean a fresher, healthier school food service program that meets new nutrition criteria, as developed and adopted by RI Department of Education. The new state nutrition criteria for school meals is entitled RINR 2009 or RI Nutrition Requirements 2009. The state plan, as funded through a USDA Team Nutrition grant, is that all 36 RI school districts will implement RINR 2009 by September 2009. However over a dozen RI school districts will begin implementation in September 2008 and Smithfield is one of them! Kids First's Chef and Nutritionist team will be training Smithfield food service staff today as to the requirements of RINR 2009. All will learn, practice and discuss how to incorporate RINR 2009 into the everyday breakfast and lunch programs of Smithfield public schools. All children in the Smithfield school system will be able to enjoy more and wider variety of fruits and vegetables (locally grown too!), more whole grains and less processed foods (lower sodium.)
