Kids First is at Cranston YMCA Healthy Kids Day
Lisa Kennedy, Physical Activity Director at the Cranston YMCA, wants
to provide the community with some healthy, fun activities for kids of
all ages. The YMCA is holding its National Healthy Kids Day and Kids First
Chef Heidi Carla has been invited! Healthy Kids Day is meant to get kids
moving more and eating better. Chef Heidi will provide a multitude of
tips on how to prepare healthy snacks and how to have fun doing it.
4/12: Kids First is at Arcadia YMCA Healthy Kids Day|
Rachelle Myllymaki and Sandy Cloutier, Coordinators of Healthy Kids
Day at the Arcadia YMCA in Wyoming, wants to provide the community with
some healthy, fun activities for kids of all ages. The YMCA is holding
its National Healthy Kids Day and J&W Culinary-Nutrition Intern, Justin
Polemeni, has been invited! Healthy Kids Day is meant to get kids moving
more and eating better. Justin will provide a multitude of tips on how
to prepare healthy snacks and how to have fun doing it.
4/15: Pawtucket Plants Veggies With Master Gardener
Benjamin Goulet, Children's Librarian at the Pawtucket Library, would
like the students living in her community to enjoy the hobby of gardening
and eating delicious fresh veggies and herbs. She has invited Kids First
Master Gardener, Kim Korb to show the children how easy it is to plants
seeds and watch them grow into tasty healthy produce.
4/16:
RI Food Pantries in Woonsocket Get Energized
Kids First has partnered with the Rhode Island Community Food Bank
to provide member agency coordinators and staff with nutrition and physical
activity training so that they will become role models for their clients.
The coordinators and staff of the area have invited Kids First nutrition
professionals to conduct a hands-on nutrition workshop for them. Participants
will learn new ideas for preparing the foods they receive at the pantry.
Simple ways to prepare healthier, great-tasting meals and snacks and a
cooking demonstration will energize the group. Everyone will leave with
simple, new and useful recipe ideas to share.
4/21:
Community Food Share Gets Cooking with Kids First Chef
Kids First Chef, Heidi Carla, and the Rhode Island Community Food
Bank present a cooking demonstration of healthy eating at Community Food
Share. Participants will learn how to use the foods that they receive
at the pantry, simple ways to eat healthier, cooking basics and meal planning.
Chef Heidi will demonstrate ways of preparing great tasting meals that
can easily be made at home. Participants will leave armed with new, easy
and delicious recipe ideas.
4/21:
Central Falls Parents Learn Nutritious Can Be Delicious
Malia Goodwin, Director of the "Parents as Teacher" Program in Central
Falls, wants the parents in her group to know nutrition basics to pass
on to their children. She has invited Kids First Chef, Deniece Villafona,
to engage the kids and their parents in a program of healthy eating and
learning to create simple healthy recipes the kids will love to eat. An
interactive workshop along with a healthy food demonstration and tasting
reminds both the kids and their parents that what they eat can be nutritious,
delicious and easy to prepare.
4/21, 4/22: South Kingstown Students Plant Veggies
Peacedale Elementary School in South Kingstown is getting greener
by the classroom! Teacher, Mary Horton, will get her students into the
soiless mix to begin the process of growing some classroom veggies. The
school has a Classroom Grow Box so that each year her students can participate
in the Healthy Eating From the Ground Up Program. Ms. Horton has found
this program to be academically beneficial and highly motivational for
her students. Today they are ready to begin the program with some help
from Kids First Master Gardener, Kim Korb.

Newport Parents Learn Nutritious Can Be Delicious
Adelaide Ritt, "Parents as Teacher" Coordinator at the Sullivan School
in Newport, wants the parents in her group to know nutrition basics to
pass on to their children. She has invited Kids First Chef, Emily Gedney,
to engage the kids and their parents in a program of healthy eating and
learning to create simple healthy recipes the kids will love to eat. An
interactive workshop along with a healthy food demonstration and tasting
reminds both the kids and their parents that what they eat can be nutritious,
delicious and easy to prepare.
4/23,
4/30: Wyman School Hosts After School Program
Celeste Leal, parent at the Wyman School in Warwick, wants the children
in her afterschool program to learn the importance of healthy eating and
daily exercise through fun hands-on activities, so she has arranged with
Kids First to provide a variety of programs. During the first 2 weeks
of the 6 week program, Kids First Chef, Kimberly Sporkmann, will review
My Pyramid using Go, Slow and Whoa! and Kids First J&W Student Chef, Justin
Polemeni will engage the children in a variety of healthy food experiences
that are age appropriate and guaranteed to peak their taste buds. There's
plenty more, as the entire 6-week program includes lots of special guests
who will engage the children in a wide variety of healthy activities.
4/25:
