"Healthy Careers" Awareness at Metcalf Elementary School
Louise Dias, Coordinator of the EWG Substance Abuse Prevention Task
Force at Metcalf Elementary, is planning a Career Awareness Fair to educate
her students about the many career paths available. She wants to get the
students thinking about setting personal goals and to expose them to different
job choices and paths to success. Justin Polemeni, a J & W Intern at Kids
First, will be on-hand to share information about his career as a culinary-nutrition
professional. He will discuss the exciting world of culinary arts and
nutrition with the students and make them a healthy snack.
4/7:
LaPerch School Teachers Fight Bac!
Marilyn Sepe, School Nurse-Teacher at LaPerch School in Smithfield,
wants all the teachers in her school to learn about the RI Food Safe Schools
Program and how to practice food safety principles in school and at home.
She has invited Kids First Food Safety Specialist, Sandy Sepe, to conduct
a workshop with the teachers. The Kids First Professionals will engage
the participants in lots of hands-on food safety activities that will
teach principles of food safety such as cleaning, avoiding cross-contamination,
cooking to proper temperatures, and proper chilling of foods. They will
all learn how to Fight Bac! - Keep Foods Safe From Bacteria.
4/9:
Sage School in Foxboro Holds Wellness Day
Melaine Barnes, Guidance Counselor at the Sage School in Foxboro,
wants to be sure that the students in her school learn about the importance
of healthy eating and exercise. She has invited Kids First Professionals:
Louis Moniz, Physical Activity Professional and Jane Sylvestre, Dietitian,
to present a wellness program for the whole school. The students will
have fun leaning some hands-on nutrition and dancing with "Mad Louis."
4/9: Narragansett Middle Schoolers Exercise for Better Health
The Narragansett Pier Middle School is inviting Kids First to take
part in an afternoon of healthy snacks and dancing! Students and staff
will join Kids First Physical Activity Professional, Lori Keough, as she
leads fun exercise sessions in the school gymnasium.. In addition, Kids
First Dietitian, Katie Hopewood and Master Gardener, Kim Korb will also
be on-hand leading educational sessions on the benefits of eating healthy
foods. All will soon believe that promoting good health in the Narragansett
Pier School has benefits for the entire school community.
4/9: Kent Heights Teachers in E Providence Participate in "Wellness"
Jennifer Carlson, School Nurse at the Kent Heights School in East
Providence, has invited Kids First professionals: Mary-Elena DeLuca, Sandy
Sepe and Karin Wetherill, to conduct a wellness workshop for all of the
teachers at the school. This workshop is an interactive program that helps
participants improve their own nutrition and food safety habits, and increase
their daily physical activity. Workshop topics include "Sweeten Up Your
Life Without That Extra Sugar" and "Turn Household Chores into an Exercise
Program." The teachers will leave full of ideas to use in the classroom
and at home that encourage healthy eating and active living.

Students Get Up & Go! at Jenks in Pawtucket
Students at Jenks Junior High School have been "getting up and going"
every morning in this unique before school program of physical activity
and a healthy breakfast, called "Get Up & Go!" Today, Kids First will
provide a special guest for the students to "get going" with. Physical
Activity Professional, Louis Moniz, makes an appearance to MOVE the kids!
4/10: Mary Fogarty School Students Dance for Better Health
The Mary E. Fogarty School in Providence is inviting Kids First to
take part in a morning of dancing! Students and staff will join Kids First
Physical Activity Professional, Louis Moniz, as he leads active dance
sessions in the school gymnasium. "Mad Louis" will teach the pre-teens
and their teachers how to do the Bus Stop, Electric Slide, Swing, or any
dance they want to learn.

Bishop McVinney Teachers in Participate in "Wellness"
Nora Thurber, School Nurse at the Bishop McVinney School in Providence,
has invited Kids First professionals: Mary-Elena DeLuca, Sandy Sepe and

Kids First is at Heritage Park YMCA Healthy Kids Day
Deborah Gorman, Preschool Teacher at the Heritage Park YMCA in Pawtucket,
wants to provide the community with some healthy, fun activities for kids
of all ages. The YMCA is holding its National Healthy Kids Day and Kids
First Master Gardener, Kim Korb, has been invited! Healthy Kids Day is
meant to get kids moving more and eating better and what better way to
go than to include more veggies fresh form a garden in your diet.

Toll Gate Students Get a Lesson on Veggies
Deb Tillinghast, Family & Consumer Science Teacher at Toll Gate High
School in Warwick, always stresses the importance of veggies to her food
classes. She has invited Kids First J & W Intern, Justin Polemeni.to do
some hands-on preparation with her classes. Justin will help the students
cook a variety of veggie recipes that they will love and also be willing
to reproduce for their moms, dads, sisters, brothers, aunts, uncles… everyone!
